all about the light...

Many people do not realize that what makes a photograph beautiful or interesting is not only the quality of the subject matter, but more importantly the quality of the light that the subject was photographed in. The quality of light creates the strongest element of mood contained in a photograph. You can take the same scene or place and photograph it in many different types of light and evoke completely different emotions from your viewers!
I recently made two trips to Smith Rock in Terrebonne, Oregon to do some rock climbing. The trips were only days apart, but the weather couldn't have been more drastically contrasting! The first trip was sunny and about 60 degrees, which was absolutely amazing for mid-January rock climbing! The second trip was below freezing temperatures, and eerily foggy.
Here are two different shots I took (both at Smith Rock) to illustrate the way that light brings mood to a photograph and completely changes the effect a place can have on its viewers.

I have been a horrible blogger!!!

Wow! I cannot believe how much time has passed since I last posted an entry here! I think I can safely claim the world's worst blogger prize:) I have had ideas for posts milling around in my head for months and have failed to put those ideas into script because of time excuses. That's what they are...just excuses! I have decided that it is high time that I make a determination to keep all of you updated on my latest endeavors with a weekly post. I'd like to share favorite photos, details about trips, photography tips for your home use, and periodic ramblings that nobody else will listen to:) So, like it or not, here goes...

This week I'd like to share a couple of photos from my annual holiday Academy Theater photoshoot. For the past three years I have collaborated with the Academy Theater (on Stark St. in SE Portland, www.academytheaterpdx.com, on doing a holiday "children's special". The folks at the Academy Theater came up with the wonderful idea of providing childcare at the theater so that stressed out moms and dads can leave their children in a safe and creative environment while enjoying a little hollywood therapy without distraction. "Munchkin Land" is located in the loft of the theater building, and has colorful walls (adorned by some of my photographs), lots of toys, and great babysitters.
My part in all of this is to set up a mini studio in the playloft once a year, and photograph munchkins while parents watch movies.
The environment provides for great expressions from the kids because they are in a fun and happy place, and don't feel pressured about having their picture taken.
This year I had the pleasure of seeing a couple of kids again that had come for the special last year. It's always fun to see how much kids grow and change in the space of only a year. Here are a couple of the images i was able to capture of them!

Holiday Vacation

Over the holidays my Husband and I took a trip back east to North Dakota. No, we didn't go for the scenery, if you were wondering:) We went because it was time to visit good friends with two of the most beautiful baby girls I know! Yes, I have "Auntie" syndrome going on. It's funny how that works...your perception of the level of cuteness needed to measure up to the babies in your life can become a little biased when you get to spend quality time with these little ones.
Why don't I let you judge for yourself how well these two rate on the cuteness scale!!! Here are some pictures that I took while there.

Portraits at the Academy

I cannot believe that the year has passed so quickly! It's time again to do pictures at the Academy Theater. I held a Christmas special in cohorts with the folks at the Academy Theater last year and it was a big hit. Let's do it again!!!
I will be at the Academy Theater on the evenings of November 29th and December 6th. Sign your children up for babysitting in the Academy's playloft while you go watch a movie. While you are relaxing I will photograph your children in a small studio setting upstairs. The children are surrounded by music, toys, laughter, and fun while being photographed. The "no pressure" setting makes for great photographs.
The cost will be $25 per child. With that fee you will get 10-15 shots, and an online password protected gallery on my website to order your prints from! The print prices are all quite reasonable...ranging from $1 for a 4x6 to $10 for an 8x10.
Sign up right away to guarantee a spot! Remember, you must first sign up for babysitting with the Academy Theater before reserving your spot with me. You can contact them at 503-252-1705 or check out their website, www.academytheaterpdx.com.

Senior Photos!!!

Believe it or not, it's that time of year again!! Summer is coming up FAST, and you need to start thinking about getting your senior pictures taken. Get a head start on everybody, and get those pics taken so that you have one less thing to worry about during your hectic last school year. I'm offering a great deal for all of you, and I'm totally excited to start a summer of senior pictures! Having your senior pictures taken should be a fun, relaxed event, and I strive to make it just that. I work on location, meaning you and I can brainstorm together and come up with a spot that expresses exactly who you are...whether that is an urban setting in the Pearl District, or a woodsy, quiet scene in Washington Park. I am currently offering 10% off of Senior sessions...making your sitting fee only $135! That amount covers my creative fee, a disc with printable images and slideshow of your favorites, clothing changes(according to location), yearbook picture, and an online password protected gallery that you can share with your friends. You can even order prints directly from the gallery and have them sent to your home!!! Another idea is to schedule sessions along with a friend or two...you would take turns having pics taken, and even get a few together!
Give me a call or drop me an email sometime soon, and we can start planning your photoshoot!!! I'll look forward to hearing from you:)
